Wounded Journalist Returns to Work in Gaza
By Matt De Vlieger · December 21, 2023

Wael Al-Dahdouh
Wael Al-Dahdouh, a distinguished Palestinian journalist and Al Jazeera bureau chief in Gaza City, has been tragically shot by Israeli soldiers this past week. He has been on the ground for the entirety of the assault on Gaza. This photo captures him in his press jacket, emblematic of his commitment to journalism. Wael Al-Dahdouh was shot while wearing his clearly labeled blue press vest and blue helmet. At the hospital, his press jacket was held to show that it was blood soaked. Recent footage shows Al-Dahdouh sustaining injuries, reportedly in the right arm, during an attack by Israeli soldiers. He was wearing his press vest at the time, underscoring accusations of the targeting of journalists despite clear identification. We have blurred out the bloody scene. Wael Al-Dahdouh/Facebook
Samer Abu Daqqa
Samer Abu Daqqa, Al-Dadouh's cameraman was not as lucky and was killed in the attack by Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza. The two were reporting at the Farhana school in Khan Younis when they were attacked on Friday. The Committee to Protect Journalists says this was a drone strike. Al Jazeera/Youtube
Lost Family
This was not the first tragedy for the journalist. Wael Al-Dahdouh's life took a devastating turn when his wife and children, including 7-year-old daughter Sham and 15-year-old son Mahmoud, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Nuseirat civilian refugee camp. The family had moved following a warning from Israel. Wael Al-Dahdouh/Instagram

Coverage Continues
