US Negotiates Diplomatic Prisoner Exchange with Venezuela

In a groundbreaking development, the United States and Venezuela executed a strategic prisoner exchange, resulting in the release of ten Americans, including six wrongfully detained individuals. The deal involved the return of a notorious figure, Alex Saab, a close ally of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, accused of a $350 million bribe scheme. Concurrently, Leonard Francis, known as “Fat Leonard,” a former U.S. Navy contractor involved in a massive bribery scandal, was arrested and brought back to the U.S. The exchange further included the release of 21 political prisoners, among them Roberto Abdul. This diplomatic success comes amidst recent efforts by the Biden administration to improve relations with Venezuela and follows a series of complex negotiations. The backdrop of the release is heightened regional tensions, particularly with neighboring Guyana, as Venezuela takes steps in a century-long territorial dispute. The article highlights the multifaceted dimensions of the diplomatic maneuver and its implications for U.S.-Venezuela relations.

Investigating Germany’s Antisemitic Coup Movement

The far-right, anti-semitic Reichsbürger Movement, comprised of anticonstitutional revisionist groups in Germany, challenges the legitimacy of the Federal Republic in favor of the historical German Reich. This movement, which rejects the modern German state, has gained attention due to its dangerous ideologies and actions.

Germany's Dangerous Reichsbürger Movement

The far-right, anti-semitic Reichsbürger Movement, comprised of anticonstitutional revisionist groups in Germany, challenges the legitimacy of the Federal Republic in favor of the historical German Reich. This movement, which rejects the modern German state, has gained attention due to its dangerous ideologies and actions.  Canva

Who Are They?

At its core, the dangerous Reichsbürger Movement consists of groups and individuals who deny the legitimacy of the Federal Republic of Germany. Rejecting the modern state's existence, they cling to historical notions, such as the German Reich's pre-World War II borders, governed by various Reichsbürger groups.

The image above shows the German Empire (a period of the German Reich) within its borders from 1871 to 1918.  ziegelbrenner/Historischer Weltatlas

Origins of the Reichsbürger Movement

Founded in 1985 by Wolfgang Gerhard Günter Ebel, the Reichsbürger Movement emerged with conspiracy theories, antisemitism, and racism. Despite its neo-Nazi character, some members advocate for the restoration of the German Empire or Holy Roman Empire. It's reported that "Reich Citizens" as they are called, were active since the 70s and even made propaganda that German Chancelor Helmut Kohl was Jewish.

Ideologies and Characteristics

The movement is characterized by conspiracy theories, antisemitism, and racism, with some adherents aligning with neo-Nazi principles. Despite internal differences, rejection of the Federal Republic's legitimacy unites them.

The photo above shows the infamous gate to Auschwitz, where the Third Reich exterminate much of Europe's Jewish population.  Canva

Rewriting History

Reichsbürger adherents believe the Federal Republic is illegitimate, asserting the survival of the German Reich. Their historical revisionism relies on selective readings of legal decisions and the 1973 Federal Constitutional Court ruling.

Membership and Growth Amidst Covid

As of 2021, there were an estimated 21,000 people belinging to the Reichsbürger Movement in Germany. Despite varying ideologies, the rejection of the Federal Republic unites this heterogeneous group.

The Reichsbürger movement radicalized amid the COVID-19 pandemic, aligning with the "Querdenker" movement and resisting recognized authorities' restrictions. Despite their systemic rejection, Reichsbürger inundate German courts with motions and objections, causing burdens for local authorities, who are obliged to process every formally filed request, regardless of content.

Some Reichsbürger groups hold antisemitic views, exemplified by organizations like "Geeinte deutsche Völker und Stämme." Antisemitic conspiracy theories often underpin the movement's ideologies.

Activities and Strategies

The movement engages in activities ranging from issuing unofficial documents to refusing taxes. Some pursue armed militia plans, while others attempt to establish sovereign entities. Some say their ideology is not unlike that of the Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh.

Violence and Extremism

Violent incidents, including the 2016 shootings and attempts to create militias, highlight the extremist nature of some Reichsbürger adherents:

2014: In Höxter, North Rhine-Westphalia, a Reichsbürger group ("Free State of Prussia") attempted to smuggle weapons into Germany to create its own militia.

2016: Adrian Ursache, a self-proclaimed Reichsbürger and former "Mister Germany," resisted eviction by firing on German police, injuring two officers; he was later convicted of attempted murder. In Georgensgmünd another Reichsbürger fired on Bavarian Police during a firearm confiscation, resulting in three officers being injured and one later dying.

2018: Reports emerged that Reichsbürger adherents were attempting to build an armed militia in preparation for "Day X," an imagined day of reckoning or uprising against the German government.

April 2022: Four members of a Reichsbürger group called United Patriots were detained for plotting to overthrow the government. Their plan involved destroying electrical substations and power lines through bomb attacks to cause a nationwide power outage, with alleged intentions to kidnap German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, who was aware of the plans.

In response to Germany's ban on swastika and Nazi symbols, some German neo-Nazis adopt an older Imperial German flag, known as the Reichskriegsflagge, as a substitute. The imperial flag, devoid of racist or anti-Semitic connotations, has gained traction not only in Germany but also in various European countries and the United States.  Wikimedia Commons

The Coup's Ringleader

The 2022 German coup d'état plot reveals connections between the Reichsbürger Movement and far-right extremism. Arrests of key figures, including aristocrat Heinrich Reuss and former politicians, underscore the group's dangerous nature.

NASA still cant get inside space canister three months after its return

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission faces a hurdle in opening the canister containing rocks and dust collected from asteroid Bennu. Despite setbacks, the mission has already provided valuable insights into the building blocks of life, with scientists eagerly awaiting the extraction of the sample.

NASA's Canister Problem

In the ongoing quest to unlock the secrets of our solar system's origin, NASA's groundbreaking OSIRIS-REx mission has encountered a temporary roadblock in the form of a stubborn canister. This precious container holds rocks and dust collected from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu, a celestial body potentially harboring clues about the formation of our planet and the birth of life itself.  NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center/Conceptual Image Lab

The Mission

Launched in 2016, OSIRIS-REx reached Bennu in 2018 and successfully gathered samples in 2020. The spacecraft returned to Earth in September 2023, depositing the asteroid fragments in the Utah desert with the hope of unlocking their secrets. However, the journey hasn't been entirely smooth. Credit  NASA's Goddard/University of Arizona

Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM)

The challenge lies in opening the canister's Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) head, where the bulk of the asteroid sample resides. Two of the 35 fasteners have proven resistant to the current tools, preventing scientists from accessing the pristine collection within. Despite the setback, the mission hasn't been a complete standstill. The curation team, working under a specialized nitrogen flow glovebox to prevent contamination, managed to collect some material from outside the TAGSAM head. They also discovered and retrieved additional dust and debris from inside the canister using tweezers and a scoop. Credit:  NASA Goddard/University of Arizona

Dust Collection

This "bonus dust" has already exceeded NASA's initial goal of gathering 60 grams from Bennu's surface. Initial analysis of this extra material revealed an abundance of carbon and water molecules, fueling the theory that asteroids like Bennu may have delivered the building blocks of life to Earth. While the main prize remains locked away, the scientific community remains optimistic. NASA is diligently developing new tools to safely extract the sample from the TAGSAM head, aiming for an opening sometime in early 2024. The cautious approach is crucial to preserve the integrity of the data and prevent Earthly contamination.  NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center

Extreme-right AfD party wins its first mayoral election in Germany

Newly elected AfD’s Tim Lochner accepts the mayorship of Pirna, as he wins the election. Over the last years, the right-wing extremist AfD has worked on making itself appear viable, giving itself a more human face to it’s outrageous populist agenda, which riles up voters over nationalism, anti-refugee sentiment, anti-pandemic measures, anti-Europe, climate change denial, science skepticism, anti-LGBTQ and ties to known authoritarian and fascist leaders and groups.

Tim Lochner

Prior to his election, Tim Lochner stands before an audience. The AfD, short for Alternative for Germany, was founded in 2013 and initially focused on opposition to the Euro and European Union policies, but it had a more extremist, nationalist agenda. Over time, it has evolved to include a range of positions, including an extreme anti-immigration stance. As you can see from banner on the podium, the AfD also had radical views on the COVID pandemic, which riled its growing base.  Pirna TV Lokalfernsehen

Björn Höcke uses nationalistic rhetoric to incite a crowd. The AfD party often pits its opponents as traitors to Germany. They use nationalist rhetoric and hate-speech to incite a populist base. The German government's domestic investigations have shown that the party's extremist-right elements pose a danger to the Country. Some independent researchers of fascism and the rise of the far-right have even dubbed AfD a "neo-Nazi party." Of course, AfD denies this.  Screengrab/DW

Björn Höcke marches with neo-Nazis in 2010

Björn Höcke, is probably the most notable member of Germany's AfD. He challenges claims that he is a Neo-Nazi, although there are videos of him marching with and joining actual Neo-Nazi demonstrations. He has cleaned-up his appearance since this time and it appears to be working as AfD earns the votes of populist crowds.  Youtube

"This stupid policy is weighing us down today. We need to do a 180 degree turn on the policy of rememberance." An enraged Höckner persuades a crowd against German policies regarding rememberance of the Holocaust. He even uses the old SS-Nazi slogan "Everything for Germany," for which he has been indicted. He's not the only one in AfD with ties to Nazi ideology and practice.  Youtube

Siegbert Droese also appears to have an affinity for Adolf Hilter

Former Bundestag member Siegbert Droese also appears to have an affinity for Adolf Hilter. His license plate is LAH1818. L, stands for Leipzig, yet the AH and 18's are known to be for the initials of Hitler and are commonly used by Neo-Nazis. 18 are the 1st and 8th letters of the alphabet. A and H. If you think this is just coincidence, continue on...  AfD/Youtube

Here Siegbert Droese can be seen proudly standing in front of the ruins of one of Adolf Hitlers residences. Ok, anyone might be interested in visiting such a place for historical purposes. But do they stand in a pose with their hand over their heart. This is not just conspiracy suspicion. The German authorities and mainstream newspapers have been deeply entrenched in investigating the connections between AfD and neo-Nazism, as there appear to be many clear links between the party, its rhetoric, it's members, and their actions and allegiances.

Rabbis for Ceasefire, Jewish organizations, lead week of peaceful protest, non-violent civil disobedience across USA

Rabbi Alissa Wise of Rabbis for Ceasefire Challenges Accusations of Antisemitism, Urges Accountability for Israeli Actions

November 16, 2023

Rabbis lead demonstration for Ceasefire in Washington, DC. Rodfei Shalom of Rabbis for Peace/democracynow.org

In an organized display of solidarity and opposition to the ongoing violence in Gaza, Rabbi Alissa Wise, an organizer with Rabbis for Ceasefire and the founding co-chair of Jewish Voice for Peace’s Rabbinical Council, led a significant march and prayer service in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

The event garnered widespread attention, especially in the face of accusations of antisemitism from certain quarters.

Hundreds of participants, including rabbis, spiritual leaders, and supporters, gathered in front of the U.S. Capitol for a morning prayer and a reading of the Torah. The event, organized as part of the Jews for a Ceasefire Week of Action, aimed to call for an immediate end to the violence in Gaza.

This week marks the initiation of the Week of Action for Ceasefire by organizations such as IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace. In Chicago, on Monday, a substantial gathering of Jewish individuals and their allies staged a blockade at the entrance of the Israeli Consulate.

Rabbi Wise told Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman about the connection between Jewish religious principles and anti-Zionist activism. She vehemently rejected the claim that criticizing Israeli policies is inherently antisemitic, describing it as a cynical strategy to shield Israel from accountability.

We are Rabbis for Ceasefire. We are, as rabbis, responsible to serve the Jewish people’s spiritual, cultural, communal health. And as part of that, our obligation as rabbis is to ensure that Jewish people are part of the most profound and sacred obligation in Jewish tradition, which is saving lives. And that is the root of our call for ceasefire.

The march continued to congressional offices, where rabbis and supporters engaged with elected officials, including Congressmember Cori Bush. The representatives echoed the call for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the urgency of prioritizing love, peace, justice, and humanity.

Rabbi Wise also addressed the much larger “March for Israel” demonstration held in D.C., criticizing their co-organizing with antisemitic Christian Zionists, including the likes of Pastor John Hagee, who once said that God “sent Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land.” Maybe not the best person for Rabbis to be organizing with against anti-semitism.

She expressed deep concern over allowing individuals who espouse harmful beliefs about Jews to headline events and called for a rejection of such divisive narratives.

As the issue remains in high focus across the country, Rabbi Wise urged a shift in perspective, emphasizing that Israel, as a state, cannot be exempt from political and humanitarian critique.

The ceasefire rally underscored the diverse voices within the Jewish community advocating for an end to the violence and a commitment to human rights.

Thus far, the Biden administration moved from unconditional support for Israel’s military actions, to a call for humanitarian pauses, and a close eye on attacks on hospitals over the past weeks. The Administration still will not call for a ceasefire.

Nearly 10 Journalists Killed Each Week in Deadliest Month on Record

Since October 7, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that at least 39 journalists and media workers have lost their lives, making it the deadliest month for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.

November 9, 2023

The Israel-Gaza conflict has escalated, leaving an even more devastating impact on journalists in the region. We have continued to report on the situation, out of respect to our brothers and sisters in the press, risking their lives to share information with the outside world.

Since October 7, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that at least 39 journalists and media workers have lost their lives, making it the deadliest month for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.

The conflict, initiated by Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel, has resulted in over 11,000 deaths, with over 10,000 Palestinian casualties in Gaza and the West Bank, and 1,400 deaths in Israel. The toll on journalists includes 34 Palestinians, 4 Israelis, and 1 Lebanese.

Journalists in Gaza face exceptionally high risks as they strive to cover the conflict amid an Israeli ground assault on Gaza City, airstrikes, disrupted communications, and extensive power outages. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has been unable to guarantee the safety of journalists operating in the Gaza Strip, leading to heightened dangers for media professionals.

As of November 8, the updated statistics are as follows:

  • 39 journalists and media workers confirmed dead

  • 34 Palestinians, 4 Israelis, and 1 Lebanese among the casualties

  • 8 journalists reported injured

  • 3 journalists reported missing

  • 13 journalists reported arrested

  • Multiple assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings of family members have also been reported.

CPJ emphasizes that journalists are civilians doing vital work during times of crisis and must not be targeted by warring parties. Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, highlights the sacrifices journalists are making, particularly in Gaza, where they face unprecedented threats and pay an exponential toll.

The list published by CPJ includes names based on information obtained from their sources in the region and media reports, encompassing all journalists involved in news-gathering activities. While it remains unclear whether all these journalists were covering the conflict at the time of their deaths, CPJ includes them in the count as investigations into their circumstances continue. The situation is continually evolving, with CPJ updating the list regularly.

The escalation in journalist casualties underscores the urgent need for all parties involved to prioritize the safety of media professionals, recognizing their role as civilians contributing to the broader understanding of the conflict.

Just three days ago, German State’s English news broadcasting outfit, DW, reported that its reporters had been harassed and threatened by IDF for their reporting. In a tweet, DW said:

Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank "threatened" a team of journalists from the German public broadcaster ARD with their weapons, the network said. Its Tel Aviv studio called the incident an attack on press freedom. The IDF has apologized for "any inconvenience caused."

Israel is also working to censor Al Jazeera which may soon become inaccessible under “emergency regulations” which will allow Israeli government ministers to switch off the Qatari broadcaster, a main source of non-Zionist international TV coverage of the war in Gaza and the region.

Israel’s targeting of journalists is nothing new. In 2018, the Nation published a piece, To Be a Palestinian Journalist in Gaza Is to Be Always Under Threat. In it, those interviewed said:

Everyone is targeted. Even if you’re a journalist.… As long as you are Palestinian and there, you are targeted.

Economics

To make life more affordable, rent should be tax‑deductible

Making rent tax-deductible is a fair and just solution to support the majority of renters facing economic challenges. It bridges disparities in tax benefits and offers politicians an opportunity to represent the underrepresented.

November 3, 2023

It’s high time our political leaders took a bold step to ease the economic squeeze by making rent for primary residences tax-deductible.

We’re living in an era where economic hardships weigh heavily on countless individuals and families. The rising cost of housing has long posed a substantial burden, leaving many struggling to make ends meet.

Some people have been forced to leave their cities as cost of living soars post-pandemic and amidst inflation exacerbated by corporate price gouging. Making basic rent for most tenants tax-deductible is policy change that fosters fairness and provides an opportunity for the political system to make amends with the people it’s supposed to represent.

The Struggle of Renters

Across the nation, renters are feeling the financial pressure as they allocate a substantial portion of their income to secure a place they can call home. Recent statistics reveal that the average American household spends about 30% of their earnings on rent. For those with limited means, this figure can surge to an astonishing 50% or even more, making the quest for affordable housing an uphill battle.

Paying Rent for Life-Sustaining Activities

Rent is not just a financial transaction or a luxury. It’s not a “nice-to-have”— it’s a lifeline. Renting a home, for those who cannot afford to buy, enables life-sustaining activities, and a stable home serves as a primary base for employees to stage their work. It’s where they start and end their workday, prepare for their professional responsibilities, and decompress from the challenges they encounter. The significance of a secure, affordable dwelling cannot be understated.

A Tax Deduction for Rent: A Fair and Just Move

It’s high time for policymakers to bridge the gap in our tax code that currently favors homeowners over renters. Mortgage interest deductions are already in place, encouraging homeownership. It’s time to level the playing field by allowing renters a fair share of the tax benefits. Making rent tax-deductible is not only an act of economic fairness but also a powerful way to address the needs of the majority of the population who work hard for a living.

Relief for Low-Income Individuals and Families

The idea of a tax deduction for rent is not a mere suggestion; it’s a solution that can provide significant relief to low-income individuals and families who face a constant struggle to make ends meet. By freeing up funds that would otherwise go toward rent, this policy change allows for a more secure financial future. These funds can be allocated to other pressing needs, such as healthcare, education, or building a financial cushion for emergencies.

Supporting Existing Programs

Many programs are being put in place and with some success, to address the housing affordability crisis, but their reach and impact need to be expanded. Local Renters’ Credits offer tax relief to low-income renters in some cities, providing essential financial support. Affordable Housing Tax Incentives encourage developers to create affordable housing options, which, when expanded, can alleviate the housing shortage. Rent Control Policies help stabilize housing costs but need broader implementation to benefit more renters. Rental Assistance Programs directly aid renters, but their funding and availability often fall short. Local Housing Initiatives can be instrumental in building affordable housing and providing subsidies, but these initiatives must be amplified to make a more significant impact on the affordable housing crisis. It’s time to build upon these existing initiatives and take bolder steps toward making housing affordable for all.

What’s Already on the Books

Age and Disability-Based Benefits

  • Arizona: Offers tax benefits to older and disabled renters.

  • Colorado: Provides tax benefits to older and disabled renters as well.

Income-Based Benefits

  • Washington, D.C.: Offers the Individual Income Property Tax credit, giving renters with a household income of $20,000 or less a credit.

Rent and Property Tax Relationship

  • Indiana: Allows renters to deduct up to $3,000 if the property they rent is subject to Indiana property tax. The deduction is capped at the total rent paid or $3,000, whichever is less.

  • Maryland: Uses a formula based on total income for the year to calculate the potential renter’s tax credit, with a maximum limit of $1,000.

  • Massachusetts: Limits rent deductions to 50% of rent paid during the year, up to a maximum of $3,000.

  • Maine: Offers a property tax fairness credit based on income limitations and household size, applying to both renters and homeowners who meet the criteria.

  • Pennsylvania: Provides a renter’s tax credit program, but specific details were not mentioned in the article.

Addressing Disparities

It’s essential to address the existing disparities in tax credits. While homeowners enjoy tax benefits like the mortgage interest deduction, renters often do not receive similar financial relief. This imbalance in the tax code leaves a significant portion of the population, primarily renters, without the support they need to address the rising cost of housing.

Making rent tax-deductible would help bridge economic divides, providing a fair and just solution to the challenges faced by those who make up the majority of our population — renters. This policy not only promotes economic fairness but also offers an opportunity for political leaders to represent the interests of the many who have long been underrepresented in the realm of tax policy.

We just need leaders who actually represent the people and who are brave enough to propose and pass these measures. These policies are working in many places. Is it time for federal legislative action? Whichever party or politician does take the lead on this, will be sure to win the support of the vast majority of people.

‘Stalemate’: counteroffensive stalls, heaviest bombardment yet, landmine crises worsens

General Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, admitted that a five-month-long counteroffensive against Russia has largely failed, drawing a grim comparison to the trench warfare of World War I. Ukraine is currently experiencing one of the heaviest bombardments of the conflict, with Russian shells falling on nearly 120 settlements, resulting in a devastating toll on civilians, with over 9,900 civilian casualties since the start of the invasion.

November 2, 2023

General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, General Valery Zaluzhny, recently made a sobering admission about the ongoing conflict with Russia. Despite a five-month-long counteroffensive, Ukraine has largely failed to recapture the territory lost to Russia’s invasion.

In a grim analogy, General Zaluzhny likened the current situation to the brutal trench warfare of World War I, where vast numbers of troops were sacrificed to regain small patches of land.

This admission comes at a time when Ukraine’s military is reporting an alarming increase in Russian attacks. Over the past day, Russian shells have rained down on nearly 120 settlements, marking one of the heaviest bombardments witnessed in this prolonged conflict.

The toll on civilians is devastating, with the United Nations’ humanitarian affairs office reporting that over 9,900 civilians have lost their lives since the start of Russia’s invasion. That’s an average of nearly 16 civilians killed every day.

The war has left an indelible mark on Ukraine, and not just in terms of lives lost. It has also turned the country into the most heavily mined nation in the world. The Ukrainian government estimates that approximately a third of its territory is now covered in landmines and unexploded ordnance, making the land fraught with danger for its citizens and posing a significant challenge for post-war recovery efforts.

The ongoing conflict continues to have devastating consequences for Ukraine and its people, both in terms of the loss of life and the long-lasting scars it has left on the nation’s landscape. It underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to end the suffering and destruction that has befallen this Eastern European nation.

UN official resignation cites ‘textbook case of genocide’

In his resignation letter to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Craig Mokhiber, Director of the New York Office, accuses the United Nations of failing to prevent mass atrocities and protect vulnerable populations. He condemned the ongoing situation in Palestine, alleging it is a genocide unfolding and presents a ten-point plan for immediate action, including a call for a UN protection force, disarmament, and a more principled approach to the situation in Palestine.

In a surprising move, Craig Mokhiber, the Director of the New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, has tendered his resignation, accompanied by a scathing indictment of the United Nations for its failure to address what he unequivocally describes as a genocide unfolding in Palestine. Mokhiber’s resignation letter, dated October 28, 2023, and addressed to Volker Turk, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, is a stark and impassioned call to action.

This week Mokhiber appeared on Democracy Now! to discuss his resignation with host Amy Goodman.

A Dire Situation Unfolding Before Our Eyes

Mokhiber begins his letter by acknowledging the global anguish surrounding the situation in Palestine, where he believes a genocide is taking place. He points out that the United Nations, an organization established to prevent such atrocities, seems powerless to stop it.

“Once again, we are seeing a genocide unfolding before our eyes, and the Organization that we serve appears powerless to stop it.”

Mokhiber’s extensive experience in human rights investigations in Palestine, including living in Gaza and conducting missions in the region, lends a deeply personal dimension to his concerns. He draws parallels with previous genocides and atrocities and notes the UN’s repeated failure to fulfill its duty to prevent mass atrocities, protect the vulnerable, and hold perpetrators accountable.

A Stark Accusation: Genocide in Palestine

Mokhiber does not mince words when characterizing the situation in Palestine, asserting that the current violence against Palestinians amounts to genocide. He argues that it is rooted in an ethno-nationalist settler colonial ideology, coupled with explicit statements of intent by Israeli leaders, leaving no room for doubt or debate.

This is a text-book case of genocide.

He highlights the indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure in Gaza, the seizure of homes based on race in the West Bank, and the presence of apartheid conditions across the land.

Complicity of Western Powers

Mokhiber goes on to accuse the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, and much of Europe of being complicit in the crisis. He asserts that not only are these governments failing to uphold their treaty obligations under the Geneva Conventions, but they are actively supporting Israel through economic, intelligence, political, and diplomatic means.

The governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, and much of Europe, are wholly complicit in the horrific assault.

A Ten-Point Plan for Immediate Action

In his resignation letter, Mokhiber presents a ten-point plan to address the situation in Palestine. This plan includes calling for a transitional justice process, advocating for a UN protection force to safeguard civilians, pushing for the removal and destruction of Israel’s stockpiles of weapons, recognizing the lack of credibility in Western mediators, and welcoming human rights defenders in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

We must work for an immediate ceasefire, an end to the longstanding siege on Gaza, and stand up against the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, Jerusalem, and the West Bank.

A Call to Embrace a More Principled Course

Mokhiber concludes his letter by urging the UN, particularly the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to embrace a more principled and bold approach. He calls on OHCHR to join the global anti-apartheid movement and stand for equality and human rights for the Palestinian people.

The world is watching. We will all be accountable for where we stood at this crucial moment in history. Let us stand on the side of justice.

Craig Mokhiber’s resignation letter serves as a powerful reminder of the urgency of the situation in Palestine and the need for international action to address the crisis. His accusations and calls for action place considerable pressure on the United Nations to respond effectively and address the allegations made by the departing Director. The world is indeed watching, and the responsibility to act in the face of such a crisis is a challenge the international community cannot ignore.

Journalists perish as widespread assault on Gaza continues

As of November 1, CPJ’s preliminary findings reveal that at least 33 journalists and media workers have been impacted, among a total of over 10,000 casualties, which include 8,525 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis.

November 2, 2023

The ongoing Israel-Gaza war has exacted a heavy toll on journalists since the events of October 7 and Israel’s retaliatory strikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip.

We continue to update based on investigations by the independent Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) which are ongoing regarding reports of journalists and media workers who have been killed, injured, detained, or gone missing due to the war, with hostilities even spreading into neighboring Lebanon.

As of November 1, the statistics regarding journalist casualties are as follows:

  • at least 33 journalists and media workers were confirmed dead: 28 Palestinians, 4 Israelis, and 1 Lebanese.

  • 8 journalists were reported injured.

  • 9 journalists were reported missing or detained.

  • Ongoing instances of attacks, arrests, threats, censorship, and the targeting of journalists’ family members.

These are among a total of over 10,000 casualties, which include 8,525 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis.

Notably, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) informed Reuters and Agence France Press news agencies that they could not guarantee the safety of their journalists working in the Gaza Strip. This came after the media outlets sought assurances that their journalists would not be targeted by Israeli strikes.

It goes without saying that journalists in Gaza confront exceptionally high risks while covering the conflict, given an Israeli ground assault on Gaza City, devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, and extensive power outages.

CPJ is actively investigating various unconfirmed reports concerning additional journalists who may have been killed, injured, detained, or threatened. They are also looking into damage inflicted on media offices and journalists’ residences.

Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator said:

“CPJ emphasizes that journalists are civilians doing important work during times of crisis and must not be targeted by warring parties”

He highlighted the immense sacrifices made by journalists across the region to report on this heart-wrenching conflict. Journalists, particularly those in Gaza, have borne an unprecedented toll, facing exponential threats, and enduring the loss of colleagues, families, and media facilities, while often seeking safety without any secure refuge.

The list of journalists affected in this crisis is based on information from CPJ sources in the region and media reports. It comprises all journalists involved in news-gathering activities. While it remains unclear whether all of them were covering the conflict at the time of their casualties, CPJ includes them in the count as their circumstances are under investigation, and the list is regularly updated.
